Story About
Mutune Water
Kitui, home to approximately 1.1 million people, struggles with water access due to its semi-arid climate. Initially, Mr. John Mwandia drilled a borehole for his family and a few neighbors. However, the overwhelming demand from local residents highlighted the region's acute water scarcity.
Mr. Mwandia expanded the project, connecting additional households. He installed a solar-powered pumping system capable of pumping up to 6,000 liters of water per hour, along with three 10,000-liter elevated water tanks. To date, 99 households have been connected. Furthermore, a public water point was constructed to provide clean water access to those not yet connected. However, much more is required to reach out to the broader population ...
About Kitui
Kitui, a rural region in Kenya with roughly 1.1 million residents, faces significant water access challenges due to its semi-arid climate and hilly terrain. The local population primarily relies on rain-fed agriculture and livestock keeping for their livelihoods but frequently encounters droughts and crop failures because of climate change and environmental degradation.
The Challenge
Most households in the region lack access to clean piped water, relying on unsafe sources like rivers, ponds, or shallow wells, risking exposure to waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery, major causes of death locally. Women and children are disproportionately affected, often walking long distances daily to fetch water, sacrificing their education, health, and safety.
Our Goal
We are on a mission to bring clean and safe water to 600 households, in two years, and to expand our reach to 3000 homes in five years. This is not just a water project, but a holistic approach to improve the lives of the people in this community.

By providing piped water, we will achieve three main objectives:
- We will enhance food security and reduce hunger
- We will create much needed employment opportunities
- We will build the capacity of the community in water resource management
